In 2019, a systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 studies involving 262 patients was conducted to assess the effectiveness of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment for androgenic alopecia, a genetic hair loss disorder. The review found a significant increase in hair number per cm² and terminal hair density in the PRP treatment group compared to the control group. However, due to the low quality of the studies, small sample sizes, and varying treatment regimens, the results were to be interpreted with caution. Temporary pain at the injection site and bleeding were the most common complications reported. The review concluded that while PRP showed promise as a treatment for androgenic alopecia, more high-quality, randomized controlled studies were needed to confirm these findings and establish standardized PRP preparation and treatment protocols.
