Pigmentation Effect of Rice Bran Extracted Minerals Comprising Soluble Silicic Acids

    Hyun‐Jun Jang, Young‐Kwon Seo
TLDR Rice bran extract can increase melanin production and may help treat melanin deficiency.
The study explored the pigmentation-promoting effects of orthosilicic acid (OSA) and rice bran extract (RBE) on human melanoblasts. It found that melanin levels were 10% higher in cells treated with OSA, RBE, and α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) compared to controls. Tyrosinase activity was 10% higher in the OSA and MSH groups and 20% higher in the RBE group. Both OSA and RBE increased the expression of melanogenic markers and enhanced melanin synthesis, with RBE showing greater efficacy than MSH. However, they also induced a 10% increase in lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity, indicating cell stress. The study concluded that RBE and OSA could stimulate melanocyte activity and promote pigmentation, with RBE being a potential novel material for enhancing melanin production.
