TLDR Rice bran extract boosts melanin production in hair follicles.
The study investigated the effect of rice bran extract (RBE) on melanin production using a three-dimensional hair follicle-like tissue (HFLT) model and a hair follicle (HF) organ culture model. RBE treatment significantly increased the expression of melanogenesis-related proteins, including the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor, in both models. The results indicated that RBE promotes melanin biosynthesis, suggesting that the HFLT model could be a valuable tool for studying hair follicle melanogenesis and evaluating new materials for enhancing melanin production.
