TLDR Paris polyphylla saponins may effectively treat acne due to their antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The review discusses the potential of saponins from Paris polyphylla in treating acne, emphasizing their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. These saponins show promise in reducing inflammation, combating bacteria, modulating immune responses, and providing antioxidant benefits. They inhibit inflammatory factors, regulate immune responses, control sebum production, and prevent follicular hyperkeratosis. The study highlights the effectiveness of these saponins in reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines, inhibiting NF-κB activation, and suppressing bacterial growth, particularly against P. acnes, S. epidermidis, and S. aureus. Additionally, they enhance antioxidant enzyme activity and reduce oxidative stress. Various extraction methods for these saponins are reviewed, suggesting their potential as a natural treatment for acne.
