TLDR Minoxidil tretinoin liposomal based hydrogel shows promise for effective treatment of hair loss by delivering both drugs at the same time.
In 2020, a study was conducted to investigate the potential of a minoxidil tretinoin liposomal based hydrogel for topical treatment of androgenic alopecia. The liposomal hydrogel system was found to be successful in simultaneously delivering minoxidil and tretinoin, overcoming the limitations of existing formulations. The liposomes were stable, homogeneous, and capable of holding both drugs. The hydrogel enhanced the permeation of drugs through the skin and was non-irritant. An ex vivo permeation study showed that about 28.76% of minoxidil permeated through rat skin from the liposomal hydrogel after 6 hours. The formulation reached the desired site of action in the hair follicles. The study concluded that the developed system showed potential for effective and simultaneous delivery of both drugs.
