TLDR Different PCOS characteristics affect lipid profiles, increasing cardiovascular disease risk, so regular lipid screening is advised.
This retrospective study examined the lipid profiles of 700 Chinese women with PCOS, revealing a high prevalence of dyslipidemia (41.3%), particularly low HDL levels. Women with clinical hyperandrogenism had decreased HDL and Apo-A levels, while those with insulin resistance showed increased levels of TG, LDL, Apo-B, TG/HDL, and Apo-B/Apo-A. Dysglycemia and T2DM were associated with higher TC and TG levels, and TG and Apo-B levels tended to rise with BMI. The study concluded that different PCOS characteristics are linked to distinct lipid profiles, suggesting a complex relationship between lipid metabolism and PCOS, which may contribute to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular lipid screening and identifying PCOS subgroups for lipid-lowering treatment were recommended.
