TLDR Keratins K6 and K16 are expressed more freely in regenerating mouse skin than K1 and K10.
The study investigated the expression of keratins K6 and K16 in mouse epidermis after applying the tumor promoter TPA. It was found that TPA induced epidermal hyperplasia and altered keratin expression patterns. K6 was immediately and continuously expressed in all epidermal layers, including replicating cells, while K16 was transiently expressed in post-mitotic cells from 8 to 72 hours post-treatment. This indicated that K6 and K16 expression was less restricted by cell replication compared to the typical keratins K1 and K10.
