TLDR Lichen planopilaris (LPP) is linked to androgen excess, while frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is linked to androgen deficiency.
This retrospective data analysis of 168 patients with lichen planopilaris (LPP) aimed to determine the prevalence of androgen excess in postmenopausal LPP patients. The study found that 31.5% of LPP patients exhibited androgen excess, while 32.1% of patients with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) showed androgen deficiency. The androgen excess group was significantly more likely to present with conditions such as hirsutism, seborrheic dermatitis, polycystic ovary syndrome, and ovarian cysts. The study concluded that LPP is associated with androgen excess, whereas FFA is linked to androgen deficiency, although it was limited by its retrospective nature.
