TLDR Hair transplantation is the best method for restoring hair, especially for genetic hair loss.
This review article provides a historical overview of hair transplantation (HT) techniques, tracing their development over the past 200 years. It highlights key contributions from pioneers like Dieffenbach, Hodara, and Okuda, and discusses significant milestones such as punch grafting, follicular unit transplantation (FUT), and follicular unit extraction (FUE). FUT focused on natural follicular grouping, while FUE offered minimally invasive methods with quicker recovery and improved aesthetics. Recent innovations include robotic-assisted procedures and bioengineered follicles, emphasizing precision and patient-centered care. The article concludes that HT remains the most effective method for hair restoration, especially for androgenetic alopecia.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
