TLDR Oregano extract can promote hair growth and has antioxidant benefits without being toxic.
In the 2013 study, the effects of Origanum vulgare (oregano) extracts on hair growth were investigated through various methods. The study assessed cell proliferation in human hair dermal papilla cells (HHDPC) using the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay, antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, and the expression of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) through reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Additionally, the study involved a topical application of oregano extract on C57BL/6 mice over a period of 3 weeks to observe hair growth. The mice were divided into four groups: a normal group treated with saline, a negative control group treated with dimethyl sulfoxide, a positive control group treated with 5 mg/mL minoxidil, and an experimental group treated with Origanum vulgare extracts. The results showed that the oregano extract did not exhibit cytotoxicity in HHDPC at concentrations up to 10 μg/mL and demonstrated antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 31.0 μg/mL. Furthermore, IGF-1 expression in the skin was significantly increased, suggesting that Origanum vulgare extracts could promote hair growth without toxicity and with antioxidant benefits.
