TLDR Gene variations may increase oxidative stress in male pattern baldness.
The study on 43 male patients with androgenic alopecia (AGA) explored the link between glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene polymorphisms, total antioxidant status (TAS), and blood pressure changes. It found that GST gene polymorphisms might be related to increased oxidative stress and decreased TAS in AGA patients. Specifically, the GSTP1 A114V heterozygous genotype was associated with higher total oxidative stress (TOS) levels, and the GSTT1 null genotype was linked to lower TAS. Although not statistically significant, a positive correlation was noted between AGA stages and oxidative stress, suggesting oxidative stress may rise as AGA progresses.
