TLDR Ginseng may improve skin health and anti-aging, but how it works is still unclear.
Ginseng and its byproducts, such as ginsenosides and gintonin, offer promising benefits for skincare and skin health, including anti-aging, skin whitening, and wound healing. These compounds protect against UV-induced damage, promote collagen synthesis, and enhance skin elasticity. Gintonin, in particular, aids in hair growth and wound healing through LPA receptor activation, while ginsenosides inhibit melanin formation and improve skin elasticity. Ginseng extracts also alleviate atopic dermatitis symptoms and reduce hypertrophic scars by modulating inflammatory responses. Despite the high cost of ginseng, utilizing byproducts from red ginseng processing could reduce costs and enhance their value in cosmetics. Combining different ginseng components may enhance skincare benefits, reflecting ginseng's traditional health role and growing importance in cosmetics.
