TLDR Plant extracts could be effective natural skincare ingredients.
This review highlights the growing interest in using plant-derived ingredients from officinal species in skincare due to their multifunctional bioactivities. It examines medicinal plants like Camellia sinensis, Panax ginseng, and Mentha piperita, which provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, photoprotective, and anti-aging benefits. Additionally, less conventional plants such as Drosera ramentacea and Kigelia africana show depigmenting and wound-healing potential. Key bioactive compounds, including flavonoids and polyphenols, target skin mechanisms like COX-2 and the Nrf2 pathway. The findings suggest that botanical extracts could be effective, natural agents in skincare, although only Mentha piperita is currently recognized for dermatological use.
