Expression of Peroxisome Proliferator Activated Receptors (PPARs) in Human Hair Follicles and PPARα Involvement in Hair Growth

TLDR PPAR alpha may help in hair growth and could be a target for treatment.
The study from October 2000 investigated the expression of Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) subtypes alpha, delta, and gamma in human hair follicles and the role of PPAR alpha in hair growth. The researchers used reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry to confirm that PPAR alpha, delta, and gamma were present in both dermal and epithelial cells of human hair follicles. They also tested the effect of clofibrate, a PPAR alpha ligand, on the survival of cultured human hair follicles and found a beneficial effect at specific concentrations. This suggests that PPAR alpha may play a role in hair follicle biology and could potentially be targeted for hair growth therapies. The exact number of hair follicles used in the study was not provided.
