TLDR Exosomes could improve skin and hair treatments but are limited by cost, production difficulty, and need for more research.
This review discusses the potential of exosomes in cosmetic dermatology, highlighting their ability to stimulate neoangiogenesis, reverse fibroblast senescence, promote extracellular matrix synthesis, and regulate oxidative stress and inflammation. Evidence from 35 articles, including four clinical studies, shows significant improvements in skin health, such as wrinkle reduction, increased elasticity, and hydration. Exosomes from sources like human adipose tissue and umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells have been effective in reducing photo-oxidative stress, promoting hair growth, and enhancing skin rejuvenation. Despite promising results, current clinical trials are limited and involve small sample sizes, necessitating further research with standardized protocols and rigorous testing to confirm effective usage and doses.
