Evaluation of an Eucalyptus Oil Containing Topical Drug Delivery System for Selected Steroid Hormones

Babette Biruss, Hanspeter Kählig, Claudia Valenta
TLDR The eucalyptus oil system improved skin delivery of hormones, but safety concerns remain.
The study evaluated a microemulsion system containing eucalyptus oil for delivering steroid hormones like 17-β-estradiol, progesterone, cyproterone acetate, and finasteride through the skin. It found that finasteride had the highest permeation rate, attributed to its increased solubility in the lipophilic phase. The microemulsion system, which included ethanol and polymeric agents, enhanced the permeation rates and chemical stability of the hormones, except for cyproterone acetate with polycarbophil. Despite the potential for improved transdermal delivery, concerns about inflammatory reactions and toxicity were noted, indicating the need for further in vitro toxicity studies.
