TLDR Alopecia areata affects about 1.93% of people worldwide, with more women affected than men.
The study provides a comprehensive analysis of the global epidemiology of alopecia areata (AA), revealing that it affects approximately 1.93% of the global population, with a higher prevalence in females (2.25%) compared to males (1.62%). It highlights significant geographical variability, with the highest incidence in South Korea and a notable prevalence in North Africa and the Middle East. The study emphasizes the need for more comprehensive data, as 89.1% of countries lack raw epidemiological data, which could lead to biases. It also underscores the economic burden of AA due to productivity loss and calls for improved awareness, diagnostic pathways, and management strategies, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite limitations, the study offers valuable insights into AA's prevalence and incidence, influenced by factors such as age, gender, and geographic location.
