TLDR Alopecia areata causes a significant economic burden in Japan, mainly due to productivity loss.
The study on the economic burden of alopecia areata (AA) in Japan, involving 235 patients aged 15-64, found significant direct and indirect costs, with an estimated annual cost of ¥112.7 billion (US$ 857 million). The majority of costs (78.2%) were due to productivity losses, particularly presenteeism, and 20.3% were due to medication costs. Patients with 25%-100% hair loss experienced twice the productivity losses compared to those with less than 25% hair loss. The study highlighted the substantial financial and social impact of AA, emphasizing the need for better treatment options and support to alleviate the economic burden on patients.
