TLDR Combining 5% spironolactone and 5% minoxidil is safe and more effective for treating hair loss.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of combining 5% topical spironolactone and 5% topical minoxidil solutions in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in both men and women. Conducted at al-Azhar University Hospital, the study involved 120 patients divided into three groups: one using minoxidil, one using spironolactone, and one using both. Results showed no significant changes in certain dermoscopic features (yellow dots, peripilar sign, honeycomb hyperpigmentation) in the combination group, but significant improvements in hair shaft diversity, vellus hair, follicular units with one emerging hair, and upright re-growing hair. The conclusion suggests that both treatments are safe and more effective when combined.
