CuCS/Cur Composite Wound Dressings Promote Neuralized Skin Regeneration by Rebuilding the Nerve Cell Factory in Deep Skin Burns

TLDR The CuCS/Cur wound dressing helps regenerate nerves and heal deep skin burns by rebuilding hair follicles.
A study designed a wound dressing called CuCS/Cur, incorporating copper-doped calcium silicate (CuCS) and curcumin (Cur). This dressing releases a bioactive Cu2+-Cur chelate that aids in regenerating skin nerves in deep burn wounds by rebuilding hair follicles, the "factory" for producing nerve cells. The chelate also stimulates angiogenesis, ensuring sufficient nutrients for wound repair, hair follicle regeneration, and nerve regeneration. The study involved 30 female BALB/c mice divided into 5 groups, each treated with different fiber membranes. The CuCS/Cur fiber membrane significantly enhanced burn wound healing, with nearly complete healing observed by the 12th day. It also promoted angiogenesis, collagen deposition, epithelialization, and hair follicle formation. The number of new hair follicles and the lengths of newborn nerves were notably higher in the CuCS/Cur group. The study concluded that CuCS/Cur composite wound dressings promote neuralized skin regeneration by rebuilding the nerve cell "factory" in deep skin burns.
