TLDR Higher concentration of botulinum toxin A is safe and effective for treating hair loss in men and women.
The study conducted at the Memorial Souad Kafafi University Hospital in Egypt evaluated the effectiveness of two different concentrations of botulinum toxin A (BTA) in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in 32 patients. The results showed significant improvements in hair condition according to the Ludwig and Norwood-Hamilton grading scales, with 56.2% of patients satisfied with their hair's overall appearance after treatment. Dermoscopic findings also showed significant improvements, particularly on the right side of the scalp, which was treated with a higher concentration of BTA (33.3 U/mL). Side effects were minor, including irritation, nausea, and mild headaches. The study concluded that BTA injections of 33.3 U/3mL concentration are safe and effective for treating AGA in both genders, but further studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are recommended.
