TLDR Accurate diagnosis and treatment of hyperandrogenism in women require comprehensive evaluation of symptoms and hormone levels.
This review addressed the complexities of diagnosing and managing hyperandrogenism (HA) in women, particularly when clinical signs and biochemical markers do not align. It analyzed androgen synthesis and metabolism, focusing on conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The review emphasized the importance of differential diagnosis to rule out rare causes such as tumors. It highlighted the need for a comprehensive evaluation of laboratory markers, including total and free testosterone, androstenedione, and others, considering clinical data like hirsutism, obesity, and endocrinopathies. The goal was to determine HA severity, identify the source of excess androgen, and assess metabolic risks to tailor treatment approaches.
