TLDR Astaxanthin may help protect hair cells from damage and prevent hair loss.
This study evaluated the protective effects of astaxanthin (ASX), a potent antioxidant, on human dermal papillae (hDP) cells against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), a factor contributing to hair loss. The hDP cells were isolated and treated with ASX before exposure to H2O2. Results showed a significant reduction in oxidative stress markers, with b-galactosidase expression decreasing from 87% in the control group to 27.61% in the ASX-treated group. These findings suggest that ASX effectively protects hDP cells from oxidative damage, indicating its potential use in treating hair loss related to reactive oxygen species.
