TLDR PCOS is the most common cause of hirsutism, and personalized treatment is important.
The study investigated 564 Portuguese women, with 514 presenting hirsutism-related conditions, to determine the prevalence and characteristics of syndromes like PCOS, NCAH, IHA, and IH. It found a prevalence of 56.2% for PCOS, 6.2% for NCAH, 17.3% for IHA, and 20.2% for IH. The research highlighted the significant role of androgens and obesity in hirsutism, particularly in PCOS, and emphasized the need to consider adrenal and ovarian androgen contributions. The study also noted the importance of distinguishing between these conditions for effective management and highlighted the complex pathogenesis of hirsutism, suggesting the need for personalized treatment approaches.
