TLDR The conclusion is that PCOS is a common cause of hirsutism in young obese women, and early treatment is important to reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome.
The study investigated the clinical and hormonal characteristics of 50 female patients with hirsutism, finding that the mean age of onset was 22.4 years and the average severity score was 11.8. Results showed that idiopathic hirsutism was present in 50% of the cases, polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) in 40%, hypothyroidism in 8%, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia in 2%. Associated conditions included acne (38%), menstrual irregularities (22%), and obesity (20%). Ultrasound results were normal in 60% of patients, but 40% had indications of PCOD. The study concluded that PCOS is a leading cause of hirsutism, especially in young obese women, and emphasized the importance of early intervention to mitigate the risk of metabolic syndrome. It suggested that more extensive studies are needed to validate these findings.
