TLDR Intense Pulsed Light is an effective and safe hair removal method for people with excessive hair growth.
The study conducted at Government Medical College, Kolkata, included 40 patients with hirsutism and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment after three sessions. The results showed that 70% of the participants had functional hirsutism, while 30% had organic causes, with 65% having Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and 27.5% having idiopathic hirsutism. Trichoscopic assessment revealed significant improvement in all patients, with a reduction in terminal-vellus hair ratio and terminal hair density. The mean modified visual analog score for treatment effectiveness was 6.75±1.1209, with 57.5% of patients experiencing a good reduction in hair growth. The study concluded that IPL is an effective and safe method for hair removal in hirsutism patients, and trichoscopy is a useful tool for evaluating treatment response.

      in Research/Science  105 upvotes 3 years ago
Finasteride was intentionally developed to treat BPH and later approved for male pattern baldness (MPB) due to its 5AR inhibition effects. The delay in MPB approval was due to concerns about off-label use for female hirsutism and the prioritization of treating a more debilitating condition.
