TLDR People with hair loss may have worse urinary symptoms due to an enlarged prostate.
This study evaluated the association between androgenic alopecia (AGA) and lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in 148 patients over 45 years old. Patients were divided into AGA (n=69) and non-AGA (n=79) groups. Results showed that the AGA group had significantly higher serum total testosterone (TT) levels, total International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), IPSS storage subscore (IPSS-S), and number of nocturia episodes compared to the non-AGA group. No significant differences were found between vertex and frontal baldness. The AGA grade positively correlated with TT levels, IPSS-S, and nocturia episodes. The study concluded that patients with AGA had worse LUTS and higher TT levels, with AGA grade correlating with TT levels and storage symptoms.
