TLDR Kumazasa extract promotes hair growth in mice like minoxidil but without side effects.
The study investigated the hair growth effects of kumazasa extract, derived from Sasa veitchii, using human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPC) and a mouse model. The extract was found to promote cell proliferation and increase aquaporin 1 (AQP1) expression, similar to epidermal growth factor (EGF). In mice, kumazasa extract demonstrated a hair growth effect comparable to minoxidil but without the inflammatory side effects observed with minoxidil. The study suggests that the hair growth effect of kumazasa extract may be linked to its ability to promote HFDPC proliferation, although the exact relationship with AQP1 expression remains unclear.
