TLDR Using 5-alpha reductase inhibitors may lower the risk of opioid addiction in men taking opioids.
This study explores the relationship between the use of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5αRI) and the risk of opioid use disorder (OUD) among male Medicare beneficiaries who are prescribed opioid medications. The findings suggest that the concurrent use of opioids and 5αRI is associated with a reduction in the risk of developing OUD, indicating that 5αRI may serve as a preventive therapy for patients at risk of OUD. These results are consistent with previous findings from animal models.
