October 2024 in “Frontiers in Nutrition” This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the link between vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and various alopecia disorders. The study found that a significant percentage of patients with alopecia areata (51.94%), female pattern hair loss (50.38%), male androgenic alopecia (47.38%), telogen effluvium (53.51%), and primary scarring alopecia (38.85%) had VDD. Notably, patients with alopecia areata (AA) and female pattern hair loss (FPHL) showed a statistically significant association with VDD and lower vitamin D levels compared to controls, with pooled odds ratios of 2.84 and 5.24, respectively. The study suggests that screening for vitamin D deficiency could benefit patients with AA or FPHL and recommends further research on vitamin D supplementation as a potential treatment for alopecia.
