Proteasome inhibitors are drugs that block the action of proteasomes, which are protein complexes in cells responsible for degrading unneeded or damaged proteins. By inhibiting proteasomes, these drugs can disrupt the regulated degradation of proteins, leading to the accumulation of defective proteins and potentially inducing cell death. This mechanism is particularly useful in treating certain cancers, as cancer cells are more reliant on proteasomes for their rapid growth and survival.
