research FGF18 signaling determines radioresistance of telogen hair follicles by the arrest of hair cycling

September 2016 in “Journal of dermatological science”

This study suggests that FGF18 may enhance radioresistance in telogen hair follicles by inducing cell cycle arrest, potentially serving as a radioprotector against radiation-induced hair follicle damage.

research Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors, p21waf1/cip1 and p27kip1, are expressed site- and hair cycle-dependently in rat hair follicles

9 citations , February 2001 in “Journal of Dermatological Science”

This study found that the expressions of CDK inhibitors p21waf1/cip1 and p27kip1 were higher during the anagen phase compared to telogen, suggesting a role in follicular epithelial cell differentiation.

research `Cyclic alopecia' inMsx2mutants: defects in hair cycling and hair shaft differentiation

158 citations , December 2002 in “Development”

In this study, Msx2-deficient mice showed progressive hair loss due to shortened anagen phase and prolonged catagen and telogen phases, resulting in cyclic alopecia with structurally abnormal hair shafts.

research Epidermal Growth Factor Induces Proliferation of Hair Follicle-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Through Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor-Mediated Activation of ERK and AKT Signaling Pathways Associated with Upregulation of Cyclin D1 and Downregulation of p16

83 citations , October 2016 in “Stem Cells and Development”

This study found that epidermal growth factor significantly enhances the proliferation of hair follicle-derived mesenchymal stem cells through the EGFR/ERK and AKT pathways, without involving the STAT3 pathway.

research Cyclin‐dependent kinase 4 expression alters the number of keratinocyte stem cells in the mouse hair follicle

1 citations , January 2022 in “Cell Biology International”

This study found that altering cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) levels in the bulge region of hair follicles affects the balance of stem cell numbers, potentially influencing hair follicle self-renewal and proliferation.

community Scalp Skin Barrier Health and Hair Follicle Cycling: A Potential Overlooked Connection

in Technology 4 months ago

The conversation discusses the importance of scalp skin barrier health in hair follicle cycling, suggesting treatments like ceramides or niacinamide to support hair growth. It also mentions the use of finasteride for hair loss.

community PP405 Won't Work Long Term: Hair Follicle Damage Due to Abuse of the ISR System

67 upvotes 11 months ago

PP405 may damage hair follicles if used long-term, suggesting cycling might be necessary. Combining it with finasteride could help maintain hair growth.

community How to correctly dose Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin Seed Oil

in Research/Science 5 upvotes 2 years ago

The user takes 1 mg finasteride three times a week, topical minoxidil daily, and Saw Palmetto both topically and orally on non-finasteride days. They recently added 1 g of pumpkin seed oil daily to improve hair thickness and are seeking advice on dosing and cycling Saw Palmetto.

community if hair follicle miniaturization happens slowly and gradually over a few hair cycles then wouldn't that mean that to regain maximum or top thickness from treatment you would at least need 5-10 years?

in Research/Science 53 upvotes 10 months ago

Hair regrowth from treatments like finasteride, dutasteride, and minoxidil can take several years, with most visible results appearing within 1-2 years and potential improvements continuing up to 10 years. Consistency and patience are crucial for achieving maximum hair thickness, as hair miniaturization and regrowth are gradual processes.

community Seasonal Hairloss

5 upvotes 7 years ago

The user experiences increased hair loss in winter, possibly due to lack of sun and vitamin D, and is using finasteride and vitamin D3 supplements to address it. Suggestions include using a red light lamp and maintaining vitamin D intake.

learn Follistatin

Protein that blocks activin, a growth-regulating signal

What is follistatin, and how does it influence hair follicle growth and regeneration? Follistatin blocks activin and related growth-inhibiting proteins, which mouse studies link to hair follicle development and cycling; the only verifiable human evidence is a single small 2011 phase 1 injection trial, so follistatin remains experimental and is not an approved hair-loss treatment.

learn KY19382

Experimental compound that activates hair-growth signals, tested only in animals

learn Rapamycin

Is rapamycin safe for long-term use on the scalp, or should it be used in cycles? There is no published human trial of topical rapamycin on the scalp, so nobody knows whether long-term use is safe; the idea of cycling it comes from community practice and theory, not from any study or guideline, and rapamycin for hair loss is an off-label use of a prescription immunosuppressant.

learn Vitamin D

Vitamin made in the skin from sunlight, also taken as a supplement
