TLDR Maintaining enough zinc may help prevent and manage hair loss.
This study on 200 Kurdish adults, including 125 with hair loss and 75 healthy controls, found significantly lower serum zinc levels in those with hair loss, especially in the telogen effluvium group. Severe zinc deficiency was present in 9.6% of hair loss subjects, with mild-to-moderate deficiency in 34.4%, compared to none and 1.3% in controls, respectively. The study concluded that lower zinc status is linked to hair loss, particularly alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, and recommends routine zinc screening and supplementation. Limitations include not measuring hair zinc levels or other relevant minerals and dietary patterns.
