TLDR Dendropanax morbifera leaf extract could be good for hair growth and cosmetic products because of its antioxidant properties and growth factor effects.
The study investigated the potential of Dendropanax morbifera leaf extract, obtained through methanol-ultrasound extraction, as a material for functional cosmetics and hair growth products. The extract showed high total polyphenol (74.082±7.180 mg/g) and flavonoid (97.360±2.235 mg/g) contents, along with a strong DPPH scavenging ability (92.440±1.023%) and moderate nitrite scavenging activity (52.6±2.4%). It also demonstrated antimicrobial activities against Propionibacterium acnes, Pityrosporum ovale, and Malassezia furfur with MIC values of 17.3%, 21.6%, and 15.7%, respectively. The extract was not cytotoxic at concentrations of 10, 100, and 500 μg/mL and even increased cell growth rates. Additionally, it promoted IGF protein expression (156±8%) and inhibited TGFβ2 protein expression (78.3±10%) in growth factor assays. These results suggest that D. morbifera leaf extract has potential as an ingredient in hair growth and cosmetic products due to its antioxidant capacity and positive effects on growth factor expression.
