TLDR Thyroid disorders are linked to skin conditions like vitiligo and hair loss, so thyroid tests are recommended.
This study conducted on 805 patients in northeastern India found a significant association between thyroid dysfunction and various dermatoses. Of the patients, 14.2% had abnormal thyroid function, with hypothyroidism being more prevalent (86.1%) than hyperthyroidism (13.9%). Specific conditions like vitiligo, melasma, and lichen planus pigmentosus showed notable thyroid dysfunction rates. The study concluded that thyroid disorders were strongly associated with conditions such as vitiligo, alopecia areata, diffuse hair loss, dry skin, chronic urticaria, and melasma, suggesting that thyroid function tests should be included in routine investigations for these conditions.
