TLDR Encapsulated Garcinia mangostana extract in cream penetrates skin better than other forms.
The study aimed to enhance the penetration efficacy of Garcinia mangostana Linn (GML) extract, which is water-insoluble, by using encapsulation and comparing its skin penetration in particulate and non-particulate form within water and cream vehicles. The penetration depth into 50 hair follicles for each formulation was measured using fluorescence microscopy, and tape stripping was employed to assess the distribution of GML on the stratum corneum. The findings indicated that both encapsulated and free GML penetrated deeper when applied in a cream base compared to an aqueous base. Moreover, encapsulated GML showed a more homogeneous distribution on the stratum corneum than free GML. The study concluded that encapsulated GML in a cream base achieved the highest level of penetration in porcine ear skin.
