TLDR Higher PSA levels are linked to more hirsutism in women with PCOS.
The study investigated the relationship between serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and hirsutism in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Conducted from June to December 2021, it involved 172 participants, with 86 newly diagnosed PCOS cases and 86 healthy controls. Results showed significantly higher serum PSA levels in PCOS females (0.325±0.243 vs. 0.119±0.209, P <0.0001), along with increased testosterone and DHEAS levels. A strong positive correlation was found between PSA and hirsutism, as well as with testosterone and DHEAS levels. The study concluded that elevated PSA is significantly associated with hirsutism in PCOS women.
