TLDR MC4R gene variants not linked to female hair loss.
The study aimed to investigate whether selected variants of the melanocortin 4 receptor gene (MC4R) are associated with female pattern hair loss (FPHL). The study analyzed six single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with MC4R in a sample of 145 UK and 100 German hair clinic out-patients with FPHL. The results showed that selected variants of MC4R do not confer susceptibility to FPHL. The study suggests that insulin resistance at the hair follicle in patients with obesity may promote clinical manifestation of FPHL in those women with a genetic disposition.
