Scalp Cooling to Prevent or Reduce Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia

    W. Andrew Jackson, Julie R. Nangia
TLDR Scalp cooling can help prevent or reduce hair loss from chemotherapy.
Recent randomized and prospective trials in the United States demonstrated that scalp cooling devices were effective in preventing or reducing chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) in a large percentage of patients. However, the rates of hair retention varied significantly depending on the chemotherapy drugs and regimens used. The evidence suggested that scalp cooling was an effective, safe, and well-tolerated intervention, potentially improving the quality of life for patients undergoing chemotherapy for neoplastic diseases.
