TLDR Intralesional triamcinolone acetonide is better than PRP for treating scalp alopecia areata, leading to faster and more complete hair regrowth.
The research compared the effectiveness of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide and autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating scalp alopecia areata (AA) in 32 patients. The results indicated that intralesional triamcinolone acetonide was more effective, with 75% of patients showing regrowth of terminal hair in clusters and 25% showing complete hair regrowth after 12 weeks. In contrast, among PRP-treated patients, 50% had sparse pigmented hair regrowth, 40.6% showed terminal hair regrowth in clusters, and only 9.4% had complete hair regrowth. Hair growth was also observed earlier in triamcinolone-treated patches. No adverse effects or recurrences were reported in either treatment group. The study concluded that intralesional triamcinolone acetonide is a superior treatment for AA than intralesional autologous PRP due to its faster hair growth and higher rate of complete hair regrowth.
