TLDR SCD1 is crucial for skin health and overall energy balance.
The study investigated the role of Stearoyl-CoA Desaturase-1 (SCD1) in skin integrity and whole-body energy balance using mice models. SCD1-deficient mice exhibited significant skin barrier defects, including severe alopecia and sebocyte hypoplasia, and increased energy expenditure, resistance to diet-induced obesity, and protection against glucose intolerance. These mice also showed changes in skin lipid composition, increased markers of inflammation and wound healing, and altered retinol metabolism. The findings suggested that SCD1 is crucial for maintaining skin integrity and plays a critical role in energy metabolism through complex interactions involving skin lipids, inflammation, and retinol metabolism.
