TLDR Oral and topical finasteride are effective and safe for treating female hair loss.
This systematic review analyzed 33 original articles on the use of oral and topical finasteride for treating female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in women of reproductive age and postmenopausal women. The review found that 5 mg of oral finasteride per day is effective and safe for normoandrogenic women with FPHL, especially when combined with other treatments like topical estradiol and minoxidil. Topical finasteride was also found to be more effective than other topical treatments for hair loss. Out of the 14 articles that met the inclusion criteria, 10 reported a high rate of alopecia recovery in women using finasteride.
