TLDR Changes in KRT17 gene activity linked to wool production in Angora rabbits.
The study involved 217 Angora rabbits and investigated the role of the Keratin 17 (KRT17) gene in wool production. It was found that KRT17 expression was significantly higher in high wool yield rabbits, and this gene plays a key role in hair follicle development. The methylation levels of the KRT17 promoter region, specifically at CpG I and III sites, were found to be higher in low yield rabbits, indicating a correlation between high methylation levels and low wool production. The methylation level of CpG III site 4 was identified as a potential epigenetic marker for wool production. The study also discovered that the transcription factor SP1 binds to the KRT17 promoter region, potentially affecting its expression.
