TLDR Probiotics and synbiotics might help manage hirsutism by improving insulin resistance.
The review explored the potential role of probiotics and synbiotics in managing hirsutism, particularly in women with PCOS, by addressing insulin resistance (IR) and elevated androgen levels. Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, were shown to improve IR and reduce androgen levels, suggesting benefits for hirsutism management. A study with 60 women indicated that probiotic supplementation decreased testosterone levels and improved hormonal profiles. Synbiotics, combining probiotics and prebiotics, also reduced testosterone levels and improved insulin sensitivity. Despite promising findings, the review emphasized the need for further studies to understand the direct effects and optimal treatment regimens for hirsutism.

Finasteride was intentionally developed to treat BPH and later approved for male pattern baldness (MPB) due to its 5AR inhibition effects. The delay in MPB approval was due to concerns about off-label use for female hirsutism and the prioritization of treating a more debilitating condition.
