TLDR Polyscias scutellaria has potential health benefits, including fighting bacteria, fungi, inflammation, diabetes, cancer, and promoting hair growth.
Polyscias scutellaria, known as mangkokan or shield aralia, is highlighted for its extensive pharmacological properties, including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, galactopoietic, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities. The plant's extracts show significant antibacterial effects against pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and antifungal activity against Candida albicans. It also promotes lactation by increasing prolactin and oxytocin levels in lactating rats, and demonstrates potential in managing diabetes by lowering blood glucose levels in alloxan-induced rats. Notably, Polyscias scutellaria promotes hair growth, with effects comparable to minoxidil, and its bioactive compounds may inhibit Bcl-2, a protein involved in cervical cancer. These findings suggest its potential for therapeutic and cosmetic applications, though further clinical studies are necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety in humans.
