TLDR Patients with alopecia areata prefer effective, safe, and convenient treatments, especially topical ones.
The review of literature on patient preferences in the treatment of alopecia areata (AA) underscores the importance of balancing treatment efficacy, safety, and convenience. Patients prioritize hair regrowth efficacy but are also concerned about systemic side effects, particularly with long-term use. Topical treatments are generally preferred, and shared decision-making with healthcare providers is valued to reduce decisional regret. There is a need for tools to help compare treatment efficacy and risks, and future research should aim to develop therapies that align with patient preferences by offering high efficacy with enhanced safety and tolerability.
