TLDR Eating healthy, exercising, and taking certain supplements can help manage Polycystic Ovary Syndrome symptoms.
This narrative review outlines the importance of lifestyle and nutrition in managing Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). It suggests that lifestyle modifications, such as diet and exercise, are crucial in managing PCOS symptoms and should be used alongside pharmacological treatments. Low glycemic index diets and the ketogenic diet have been found to be beneficial in reducing insulin resistance and improving lipid profiles. Exercise, particularly vigorous intensity, is also beneficial. Addressing sleep disorders is important due to their link to increased insulin resistance. Supplementation with nutrients like myo-inositol, berberine, vitamins, and minerals can improve clinical and metabolic profiles. Berberine, in particular, has shown to improve ovulation rates and menstrual regulation. The review also discusses the potential of herbs with endocrine properties and those that have antiandrogenic, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory effects. A multidirectional therapeutic approach that includes lifestyle improvements, diet, sleep normalization, physical activity, and supplementation is recommended to combat PCOS symptoms and improve quality of life, although further research is needed to confirm the efficacy of these interventions.
