TLDR Platelet-rich plasma injections are a promising new treatment for hair loss, showing initial positive results.
Androgenic alopecia, a genetically determined condition causing progressive hair loss in both men and women, can lead to significant psychological and social distress. Current treatments include topical minoxidil, oral 5?-reductase inhibitors, oestroprogestative drugs with anti-androgen effects for women, autograft hair transplantation, and low-level energy laser phototherapy. However, these treatments can have adverse effects and their effectiveness is not always consistent. A promising alternative treatment is the use of subcutaneous injections of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) into the scalp. This can be used as a standalone treatment or as an adjuvant treatment. The article presents the methodology, potential mechanisms of action, and some initial clinical results of this treatment.
