TLDR Microneedles are becoming essential tools in medicine for sensing, drug delivery, and communication.
Microneedles (MNs) have evolved from simple devices for puncturing the skin to multifunctional tools capable of fluid extraction, biosensing, and drug delivery, with advancements in biocompatibility and production costs. Initially made from metals, MNs now include polymer-based versions, offering limited invasiveness and ease of use. This review explores the development of smart MNs, detailing fabrication techniques and multifunctional applications such as sensing, drug release, and remote communication. Despite current limitations for therapeutic use, MNs are poised to become integral in medical practice for various applications.
