TLDR The genetic variation in the KAP13-3 gene may affect cashmere fiber traits in Liaoning goats.
The study on 214 Liaoning cashmere goats in China characterized the caprine KAP13-3 gene, identifying it as polymorphic with eight allelic variations. It showed high similarity to sheep and cattle KRTAP13-3 sequences, with nine nonsynonymous nucleotide substitutions impacting the protein structure. The polypeptide was rich in serine, cysteine, and threonine, with many phosphorylated residues, potentially affecting cashmere fiber properties. The research suggested that the KRTAP13 family existed before sheep and goats diverged, and the polymorphism in caprine KRTAP13-3 might be influenced by different mechanisms than KRTAP13-1, possibly impacting cashmere fiber quality and value.
